Norrey Seals the Deal in Brisbane
Jason Norris, playing in his 14th Blitz event, has broken through for his first triumph. In doing so, he becomes the first player to have played finals in four different states, following previous finals appearances in WA, VIC, and SA.
The field featured many top tour pros, including last year’s champion Karis Davidson and rising star Justice Bosio, along with Zach Murray, Deyen Lawson, Louis Dobbelaar, and Adam Blyth, to name a few.
Round 1
The conditions were perfect, and the golf course immaculate. While the course was set up for scoring, the wind made birdie hunting challenging. Deyen Lawson led the way through the 6-hole first-round Blitz at -2, with Jason Norris, Adam Blyth, and Jack Munro at -1. A final-hole birdie from last year’s champion ensured Karis Davidson advanced. A 4-way NTP on the Stadium Hole was required to ensure Chris Crabtree and local favourite Leon Trenerry also advanced.
Round 2
The 3-hole second-round Blitz saw the top 12 players vying for four spots in the Final. With the scores reset, players knew that even par would not suffice, leading to aggressive play on the Par 3 and particularly on the driveable Par 4. While scoring was good, four players capitalised on their birdie opportunities and each shot -1 to advance: Jason Norris, Shae Wools-Cobb, Jay Mackenzie, and Lewis Hoath. Round 1 leader Deyen Lawson needed a final-hole birdie to force a playoff, but his putt on the Stadium Hole lipped out.
The Final
With fading light, Jason hit his approach shot on the Par 4 to the back fringe, leaving a 12-foot chip to win the tournament. To everyone’s amazement, his chip hit the pin and stopped inches short. On the replayed final hole, Jason, Shae, and Jay returned to the tee after Lewis was eliminated. Shae and Jay found trouble, leaving Jason with a 10-foot putt to secure his first Blitz title. He calmly stepped up and nailed it to the delight of his supporters—an $8k putt, the difference between first and second place.
